Every gravity toilet is two systems working together. The tank stores water and releases it on demand. The bowl uses that water to create a siphon that pulls waste through the trapway and into the drain line.
When you press the handle, a lift chain pulls the flapper off the flush valve seat. Tank water rushes down through the flush valve, enters the bowl through rim holes and the siphon jet, and starts the siphon. Once the tank empties, the flapper drops back onto the seat, the float falls with the water level, and the fill valve opens to refill both the tank and the bowl. When the float rises back to its set height, the fill valve shuts off. The overflow tube stands guard the whole time, routing excess water into the bowl if the fill valve ever fails to shut off.
That is the entire cycle. Every toilet problem is a breakdown somewhere in that chain, which makes diagnosis surprisingly logical.

A standard tank holds a fill valve, a flush valve with a flapper on its seat, an overflow tube, a float, a lift chain, and the handle arm. The fill valve brings water in, the flush valve lets it out, and the float tells the fill valve when to stop. Everything else supports those three jobs.
The flapper. It is a rubber part sitting in chlorinated water, so it hardens, warps, or grows a mineral film over a few years and stops sealing. The fill valve diaphragm is the second most common failure. Both are inexpensive and replaceable without a plumber.
Mostly, with exceptions. Standard fill valves fit nearly all two-piece gravity toilets, and flappers come in common 2-inch and 3-inch sizes. However, some brands use proprietary flush valves, canister seals, or tower assemblies, so check your model number before buying. Dual-flush and pressure-assist toilets need their own specific parts.
Repair when the fix is a single tank part, since those cost little and take minutes. Consider replacing when the bowl or tank is cracked, the toilet clogs constantly despite clear drains, or it predates the 1.6 GPF federal standard and wastes water every flush.
