Our Testing and Research Methodology
How we research, score and rank every toilet on this site, and what we will never do.
What our rankings are built on
- Independent MaP flush-test scores
- Water efficiency (GPF and EPA WaterSense)
- Trapway width and flush valve size
- Aggregated owner reviews
- Brand reliability and warranty
Research updated June 2026.
How we evaluate toilets
Every ranking on Best Flushing Toilets is built from verifiable data rather than opinion. We start with the independent MaP (Maximum Performance) flush-test score, which measures how many grams of solid waste a toilet clears in a single flush. We then layer in water use (gallons per flush and EPA WaterSense certification), trapway width, bowl height, glaze quality and the patterns we see across thousands of aggregated owner reviews.
What we do not do
We do not operate a physical testing lab, and we never fake hands-on testing. We do not claim to have installed or used every toilet in our own home. Instead we compare published manufacturer specifications, third-party MaP test data and real owner feedback, and we tell you exactly where each number comes from. We do not accept payment for placement, and affiliate commissions never change our rankings.
Our data sources
- MaP (Maximum Performance) independent flush testing, map-testing.com
- EPA WaterSense program, epa.gov/watersense
- Manufacturer published specifications (TOTO, Kohler, American Standard, Woodbridge, Swiss Madison, Gerber)
- Aggregated verified owner reviews
How often we update
We review our rankings as new models launch and as MaP scores, certifications and owner feedback change. Each guide shows when it was last updated so you always know how current the research is.
The single most useful number when you want flush strength is the MaP score. Anything from 800 grams is strong, and 1000 grams is about as powerful as a residential toilet gets.
