Step 5: Install new anchor bolts. Insert the T-head of each new bolt into an oval slot on the flange. The standard flange has two slots positioned opposite each other (3 o'clock and 9 o'clock when facing the wall). Rotate each bolt 90 degrees so the T-head locks into the slot. Position the bolts so they are parallel to each other and perpendicular to the back wall. Most installation instructions recommend placing bolts 6 inches from the wall (center-to-center) for a standard 12-inch rough-in toilet.
Use the plastic alignment washers or bolt guide clips that come in most replacement kits to hold the bolts upright and centered while you lower the toilet. Without these guides, the bolts can lean inward and miss the bolt holes in the toilet base.
Step 6: Set the wax ring. Place the new wax ring on the toilet horn (the outlet at the bottom of the toilet) or on the flange. Both methods work. Placing it on the toilet gives better visibility. Do not compress the wax ring before setting. Wax deforms permanently, so align carefully on the first try.
Step 7: Lower the toilet onto the flange. Straddle the toilet and align the bolt holes in the toilet base over the protruding anchor bolts. Lower the toilet straight down in a single controlled motion. Do not tilt or rock - rocking will distort the wax and break the seal. Press firmly down and slightly forward to seat the toilet fully against the floor.
Step 8: Apply the correct torque. This is the most critical step. Add a washer and nut to each bolt. Tighten the nuts alternately (left then right, not both left then both right) so the toilet seats evenly. Tighten by hand until snug. Then use your adjustable wrench to add exactly one-quarter additional turn (90 degrees). Stop. Do not continue tightening even if the toilet feels like it could take more. The toilet should not rock at this point. If it does, check for an uneven floor - use plastic toilet shims before re-tightening.
Step 9: Cut and cap the bolts. Bolts typically extend 2 to 3 inches above the nut. Cut them down to approximately 1/2 inch above the nut using a hacksaw. File any sharp edges. Press the plastic bolt caps onto the base to cover the hardware.
Step 10: Reconnect water and test. Reconnect the supply line, open the shutoff valve, and allow the tank to fill. Flush three to four times and inspect the base for any water. Dry the base completely and place a paper towel underneath to detect even minor seepage. If water appears, do not tighten the bolts further - the wax may be improperly seated and the toilet may need to be reset.
