Match the chemistry of the cleaner to the chemistry of the stain. Mineral deposits like limescale and hard water spots are alkaline, so they dissolve in acids: vinegar, citric acid, or stronger commercial descalers. Organic growth like mold responds to disinfectants such as bleach. Rust needs a dedicated rust remover with oxalic or hydrochloric acid. Using bleach on limescale or rust does almost nothing except whiten the surface temporarily, which is why so many people scrub the same ring month after month. And never mix bleach with any acid or ammonia product. The combination releases toxic gas. If you switch cleaners, flush several times and wait between applications.

Plain white vinegar is the most effective household option for mineral stains. Pour two to three cups into the bowl, let it sit for several hours or overnight, then scrub. For stubborn spots, make a paste of baking soda and vinegar and let it fizz on the stain before brushing. This works on limescale and light hard water marks, but rust and heavy scale usually need a stronger commercial acid cleaner.
You can leave bleach in the bowl overnight for disinfecting and whitening, but it will not dissolve mineral scale, and prolonged repeated soaking can degrade rubber parts if it ends up in the tank. Never put bleach tablets in the tank itself, and never combine bleach with vinegar or any acid cleaner, since that creates toxic chlorine gas. Flush thoroughly before switching products.
A wet pumice stone used gently is generally safe on vitreous china because the glaze is harder than the stone, but a dry stone or heavy pressure can leave fine scratches. Keep both the stone and the surface wet, work in light circles, and stop if you feel grabbing. Recurring stains despite regular cleaning almost always point to water chemistry rather than hygiene.
