Embed fabric reinforcement tape at all corners and seams before the first coat dries, then apply a second coat perpendicular to the first. For sheet membranes, back-butter both the substrate and the membrane with unmodified thinset, press firmly, and use the fabric tape system at overlaps. Using polymer-modified thinset behind Kerdi is one of the most common installation errors. Schluter explicitly requires unmodified thinset for embedding Kerdi because modified thinset can form a vapor barrier that traps moisture and interferes with the membrane bond.
