A float ball fill valve uses a plastic or copper ball on a metal arm that rises with the water and shuts off a valve at the top of the tank. A float cup fill valve uses a small cup that slides up and down a central shaft, closing the valve when it reaches the right height. Float cup valves are the modern standard because they are shorter, fit more tank shapes, and are easier to adjust with a simple clip or screw. Float ball assemblies are the older Fluidmaster-style ballcock design still found in many pre-1990s toilets. For most repairs, plumbers commonly recommend replacing an old float ball assembly with a modern float cup fill valve rather than repairing it.
Lift the lid off almost any toilet tank and you will see one of two shutoff mechanisms at work. Older tanks use a float ball, a plastic or copper sphere riding at the end of a long metal arm. Newer tanks use a float cup, a small ring-shaped float that slides up and down a vertical shaft next to the fill valve body. Both parts do the same job: they tell the fill valve when the tank has enough water and shut it off. But they do it in different ways, and the difference matters if you are diagnosing a running toilet, a weak flush, or a valve that will not shut off.
The float ball sits on the end of a horizontal or slightly angled metal rod called the float arm. The other end of the arm connects to a plunger inside a tall valve body called a ballcock. As water rises in the tank, the ball rises with it. That lifts the arm, which pushes the plunger down and closes off the water supply. When you flush and the tank drains, the ball drops, the arm falls, and the plunger lifts to let water back in.
This design was standard in American toilets for most of the twentieth century. You will still find it in toilets manufactured before the early 1990s, and in some replacement parts sold today for compatibility with old tanks. The classic version most homeowners recognize is the Fluidmaster 400 series ballcock or similar brass and plastic ballcocks common in that era.
Float balls have real weaknesses. The arm can bend or corrode, throwing off the fill level. The ball itself can crack and take on water, sinking lower than it should and causing the tank to overfill. And because the whole assembly needs open space to swing through, it does not work well in tanks with unusual shapes or low profiles.
A float cup fill valve looks completely different. Instead of an arm and ball, a small cup-shaped float wraps around the shaft of the fill valve itself and slides straight up and down. A spring clip or a threaded adjustment locks the cup at whatever height you set. As the tank fills, the cup rises with the water and mechanically closes the valve at the top once it reaches the target height.
This is the design used in nearly every fill valve sold today, including the Fluidmaster 400A, the Korky 528, and most valves that come standard in new Kohler, American Standard, and TOTO toilets. Because the float cup rides directly on the valve body instead of swinging on an arm, the whole unit fits into a much smaller footprint. That makes it compatible with almost any tank shape, including narrow or low-profile tanks where a float arm would hit the tank wall.
Adjusting a float cup valve is also simpler. Most models use a spring clip you pinch and slide, or a screw you turn, rather than bending a metal rod by hand. Float cup fill valves are the better choice for nearly every home today. They fit more toilet models, adjust faster, and generally run quieter than the older ballcock and float ball setup. Toilet manufacturers moved away from float balls decades ago for these reasons, and most plumbing supply stores now stock float cup valves almost exclusively.
That does not mean a working float ball assembly needs to be torn out immediately. If your ballcock system is not causing problems, running toilets, weak fills, or constant noise, there is no urgent reason to replace it. Manufacturer guidance generally treats fill valve replacement as needed only when the part fails or the toilet develops a leak or overflow issue. But if you are already opening the tank to fix a problem, swapping in a modern float cup valve is usually worth the small cost, since parts for old ballcocks are getting harder to find.

If you decide to upgrade, the swap is a full fill valve replacement, not just a part change. Shut off the water supply, flush to drain the tank, and disconnect the supply line and the mounting nut under the tank. Remove the old ballcock assembly entirely. A new float cup valve installs through the same hole using its own locknut, and most models include a refill tube that clips onto the overflow tube. Set the water height by sliding the float cup clip, run a test flush, and check for leaks at the base and the supply connection before closing the lid.
Total time for this job is usually under 30 minutes for anyone comfortable with basic hand tools. No soldering or special parts are needed, since nearly all modern float cup valves are designed as universal fits for both round and elongated toilet bowls.
Yes, if the ballcock body itself still works, you can often buy a replacement float ball separately and thread it onto the existing arm. This only fixes a cracked or waterlogged ball, not a failing valve mechanism inside the ballcock.
